Shivan Mehta is the associate chief innovation officer at Penn Medicine, director of CHTI's Population Health Lab, and an associate professor of medicine and health policy at the Perelman School of Medicine. Shivan is also a clinical gastroenterologist and co-director of quality for the Division of Gastroenterology.

Shivan leads a team of managers, designers, and engineers to develop, evaluate, and implement health care delivery innovations across Penn Medicine. Current projects focus on connecting with patients outside of traditional venues through population health outreach and automated hovering. Shivan has led and evaluated over 30 pragmatic trials of health care delivery that leverage behavioral science, care redesign, and information technology to improve population health outcomes in areas such as colorectal cancer screening, hypertension management, breast cancer screening, hepatitis C screening, and vaccine outreach. He has received external funding from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Aging, and National Comprehensive Cancer Network to support these initiatives, and his work has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, BMJ, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Gastroenterology.

Shivan received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University, his medical degree and master’s in health policy research from the University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA in health care management from the Wharton School. He was a resident in internal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia and a fellow in gastroenterology at Penn Medicine.
