Many types of nudges can be used in health care, with varying levels of resources required for implementation and maintenance and resulting levels of impact. Below you will find a representative list of nudge types.

Defaults
Making the desired choice the default option (what will happen unless it is overruled) to guide better decision-making

Financial incentives
Leveraging monetary rewards or penalties to influence behavior (Note: Economic incentives are not technically nudges, but we include them here as they are a common tool to alter behavior.)

Gamification
Using game design elements such as points, levels, and badges to optimize engagement

Social incentives
Motivating individuals to adjust their behavior based on social norms or peer comparisons

Active choice
Requiring individuals to make an explicit choice between options

Intention setting
Prompting individuals to make a commitment to change upfront to increase follow-through
